Two Unindian Poems From Assam

Translated from Axomiya by Biswajit Bora & Tara Amrapali

O’ State, come, arrest me

I never learnt Jana Gana Mana.
Every Independence Day was our annual celebration
As a day of burning flames and protests,
A day of complete shutdown.
Each day, a day of murder, a day of rape
A day when crimson tears fell on each memory’s hearth
My heart never could feel the love for Jana Gana Mana
This anthem did not bear the name of my land
Nor the names of my rivers, my hills.

Yet in the geography classes we used to draw a map
Of a country,
And my land was there at a corner
In awkward silence
Wearing a heavy shackle around it’s slight neck.
Indifferent, we learnt to draw the tricolor
And sitting under the tree we sang about these colours
dancing in the blue sky, although
there was neither life nor colour.

Even now
Our children draw the same flag
Now,
On the 15th of August
They go to school early in the morning
And touching their foreheads with their tiny hands
They shout “Jai Hind”
(Even today my tongue cannot twist these words properly)
Yet the flaming questions of those days remain
The cries remain,
The questions keep piling up, they keep getting longer
Unrequited, we die vomiting blood.

Till our homes remain desolate
Our children remain missing
Our houses keep getting pillaged
Till the heavy boots keep quivering time
We will stay awake in our ravaged land
Seeking answers
As rebels of an ancient revolt.
O’ State, come, arrest me.

The flood ravaged villages are my home
The fire seared villages of ’83 are my home
Those villages
Where droves of young men were killed in the ‘90s, are my home
Where the shrieks of Bhanimai[footnote]14 year old student Bhanimai Dutta of Khowdang village of Lakhimpur district was gangraped and killed by Indian army soldiers on 16 October, 1991, in presence of her parents.[/footnote] and Raju[footnote]Raju Barua was a 20 years old student of Sutargaon village of Sonitpur was gangraped and killed by Indian army soldiers on 6 October, 1991. [/footnote] still haunt in the nights, are my home.

My peasant father is debt-torn,
My cadaverous peasant mother
Muses over a paddy field eroded by the river,
And my brother and my sister, jobless

O State, come, arrest me
I am guilty of revolting against you.

O accursed State, I spit on you

If my patriotism is returned with a swing of your truncheon
If your bullet determines whether it is my sedition or patriotism
Come, come down from your altar
Let’s confront each other

Come, o State, let’s take a walk amidst the curfew stinking of burnt flesh
Warm our hands on that fire ablaze since ages
And have a cup of tea
That boy making tea on the footpath, shivering in cold
He was born in a ravaged land
His father is in detention camp
His pregnant mother drowned in a pool of blood
Succumbing to injuries received from kicks by your mercenaries came to evict them
He does not understand the meaning of a country
Nor what home is

O State, for you the country means Ram, riots, bloodsheds
For us, the country means justice, dreams, clarion calls for freedom
The country means rice, rivers, Shankar–Azan
The country means red Hibiscus, red Palash, and songs in protests and love

You may plant land mines in our fields
We will sow seeds of good luck
You may stick your bayonets
We will make shares for ploughs
You may build dams on our rivers
We will dig up streams
You may build detention camps as many as you can
We will open schools there
And hoist the Red flag

Let the gaol be the final address
Let my name be written in the bullets of your gun
Every day now revolts for sedition

O accursed State, I spit on you
